Consultations - Routine & Preventative Health Checks

Regular veterinary health examinations are essential to keep your pet healthy. Whether you have a concern or a query, or if your pet appears perfectly healthy, it is a good idea to get regular check-ups. Annual check-ups coincide with booster vaccinations for most pets. Consultations are available, by appointment only, during the week and on Saturday mornings.

Our vets will examine your pet and decide on the best course of treatment. Where necessary we can organise several tests to help make an accurate diagnosis:
• Blood tests – Vetscan Haematology & Biochemistry
• Urinalysis – Vetscan UA
• Microscopy – to help with diagnosis of ear and skin disease
• Dermatology – blood samples are sent to a specialist laboratory to make a diagnosis
• Radiography – X-ray examination using DR system for excellent visualisation

Some conditions we regularly treat include:
• Cardiac conditions
• Osteoarthritis
• Vomiting and diarrhoea
• Diabetes and other endocrine diseases
• Seizure management

Microchipping

Microchipping is a quick and inexpensive way of permanently identifying your pet. While it is mandatory the have your dog microchipped under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015, it is also very important for your cat or rabbit.

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin where it stays for the duration of your pet’s life. Microchipping can be done at any age and is a very quick procedure.

Once the microchip is implanted, your details will be registered to that microchip. If your pet ever gets lost and is scanned, your details will be found and you will be reunited with your pet.

Regular Worm & Flea/Tick treatments

Both internal and external parasites have to be managed regularly as they pose a risk to both your pets’ health and your own health. We advise regular worming from two weeks of age and year-round flea/ tick control in both puppies and kittens.

We stock a full range of products in the clinic and staff are available for advice at all times.

We offer a reminder service by text message so that your pet never misses a treatment.

Diagnostics

Where necessary we can organise several tests to help make an accurate diagnosis:
• Blood tests – Vetscan Haematology & Biochemistry
• Blood testing helps to diagnose a wide range of health problems in pets. Blood tests are also used to assess a pet’s overall health as well as suitability for anaesthesia and for certain medications.
• We also use several national and international laboratories for more complicated cases.
• Urinalysis – Vetscan UA
• Microscopy – to help with diagnosis of ear and skin disease
• Dermatology – blood samples are sent to a specialist laboratory to make a diagnosis
• Radiography – X-ray examination using DR system for excellent visualisation
• X-rays can be used to diagnose various conditions such as fractures and arthritis as well as enlarged hearts and ingestion of foreign bodies.
• Although the procedure is painless, in some cases pets are sedated or have a general anaesthetic to reduce the stress associated with the procedure, to position the pet correctly and to help the animal remain still while the images are being taken.

Nutrition Advice

Nutrition is very important throughout your dog’s life, from birth through to senior years. Nutritional requirements change throughout life and there are different requirements between different breeds. Correct nutrition should ideally be provided from a very early age to support healthy and steady growth and development of puppies and kittens.

We advise owners on the correct weight for their pet and advise on daily feeding requirements. We also give advice on prescription diets. These diets are prescribed by a vet for the specific nutritional requirements of certain illnesses and conditions such as arthritis, gastrointestinal issues, food allergies, diabetes and heart disease.

We stock a range of premium brands, both life-stage and prescription, and are trained to give advice regarding which diet is most suitable for your pet’s needs. Brands stocked include:
• Calibra
• Royal Canin

Emergencies

We understand that pets don't always get sick during working hours so, outside of office hours, we provide an emergency service for our clients making sure there is someone at the end of the phone at all times. Our out of hours cover is done in rotation with other local veterinary clinics.

Euthanasia & Cremation

This can be a very difficult decision to make and we try to make the process as pain free as possible. Euthanasing your pet is one of the most difficult decisions you will need to make and our caring team will help you through this difficult time. If you have any concerns regarding your pet’s quality of life please contact us.

We offer a cremation service with group and private cremations being offered by a licensed provider. With a private cremation, your pet’s ashes will be returned in a casket of your choice.

Pet Passport

Pets need to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies before a Pet Passport can be issued. Pet Passports are legal documents and have to be authorised by a vet. Please get in touch with the clinic well in advance of travelling to find out more.

Vaccinations

Vaccination is started when your pet is young with a course of injections and is repeated regularly throughout your pet’s life. Each time you bring your pet for vaccination they will be examined thoroughly from nose to tail, ensuring that your pet continues to remain healthy.

Puppy & Dog Vaccinations

We strongly recommend vaccinating your puppy from six weeks of age. The vaccination course includes two injections, the first to be given from six weeks of age and the second from ten weeks of age. The diseases vaccinated against include Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Distemper, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis. We also recommend vaccination against Canine Cough (Kennel Cough) to ensure full protection. Dogs require an annual booster to maintain immunity against these diseases and will have their health assessed at this visit – you will also get advice on your pet’s weight, diet and flea/ tick/ worm control. We also provide rabies vaccination for pets travelling abroad.

Kitten & Cat Vaccinations

It is important that kittens and cats are protected against many serious diseases such as Infectious Respiratory disease, Panleukopaenia virus and Feline Leukaemia virus. The vaccination course includes two injections, the first commencing at eight weeks of age and the second three to four weeks later. Prior to the Feline Leukaemia vaccine being administered we would advise that all cats are blood tested to ensure that they do not already carry the Feline Leukaemia virus. We also advise blood testing for Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV – Feline AIDS) as this virus can seriously affect the health of your cat. Currently, there is no vaccine available against FIV. After the initial vaccination course, your cat will require an annual booster to maintain immunity (unless more than twelve months have elapsed).

Rabbit Vaccinations

Rabbits, just like dogs and cats, are susceptible to infectious diseases that have a serious effect on their health. We vaccinate against Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic disease (RHD Type 1 and RHD Type 2) and the vaccination can be given to rabbits over five weeks of age.

Neutering and Spays

Spays and castrations are the most common surgical procedures carried out in veterinary clinics and we recommend neutering for pets not intended for breeding. While neutering is a routine procedure, we still take every possible precaution during these operations.

A spay (surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus – ovariohysterectomy) refers to the neutering of a female while castration refers to the neutering of males (surgical removal of both testicles).

Dogs

Dogs can be neutered from six months of age while cats can be neutered from five and a half months of age.
Benefits of neutering female dogs include:
• To prevent them from coming into season on average twice a year
• To prevent them becoming pregnant with unwanted litters
• To prevent false pregnancies
• To prevent life threatening womb conditions (pyometra) occurring late in life
• To reduce the chances of developing mammary tumours in old age

Benefits of neutering male dogs include:
• To prevent testicular cancer
• To reduce the risk of prostate disease
• To reduce the desire to roam

Cats

Female cats can produce several litters a year – neutering will help to prevent so many unwanted kittens. Neutering male and female cats will also reduce wandering and the risk of them becoming involved in road traffic accidents and will reduce cat fights with the risk of abscesses and life-threatening viral infections (FeLV and FIV) developing.

Rabbits

Rabbits of either sex can be neutered – male rabbits can be castrated from four months of age and females can be spayed from five months of age. Tumours of the womb are common in female rabbits later in life and spaying can prevent this occurring.

Surgery & Anaesthesia

Dental Procedures

We examine teeth, mouth and gums at every appointment as part of your pet’s physical examination. We offer advice on preventative care and may recommend a dental procedure (scale and polish) to prevent the pain and suffering associated with gingivitis. This may prevent more complex dental requirements later in life such as teeth extraction as well as reducing the potential for other serious conditions such as heart disease.
If your pet is displaying any of the following symptoms veterinary attention/ dental treatment may be required:
• Bad breath
• Red or swollen gums
• Loose teeth
• Bleeding gums
Dental scaling and polishing is carried out as a day procedure. All dental procedures are carried out under general anaesthesia. We use iM3 air-driven dental equipment to remove plaque and tartar, as well as specialist instruments and techniques to remove painful or loose teeth. Polishing is an important process that smooths the tooth surface making it more difficult for food particles and bacteria to stick and therefore slows the future build-up of tartar.
We may recommend a tooth paste or use of an oral hygiene product after the procedure to help prevent further build-up of plaque and tartar, or a prescription diet where indicated.

Soft Tissue Surgery

As well as neutering other routine surgeries include; tumour removal, wound repair, biopsy sampling, hernia repair, and ear care. Many owners become very worried when they discover a lump/ mass on their pet. In the majority of cases the masses are non-invasive (benign) and no cause for concern – lump removal may still be necessary for a number of reasons including; your pet is fixated on the lump and keeps licking it or the lump is inhibiting movement. However, there is always potential for a mass to be cancerous (malignant) so if you find a lump on your pet you should always bring it to the attention of your vet as soon as discovered. Diagnosing cancerous masses early generally results in more favourable outcomes.
Some other soft tissue surgeries performed include:
• Pyometra surgery
• Exploratory laparotomy
• Foreign body removal

Anaesthesia

We use the safest, most up-to-date anaesthetic agents for each surgery. Every precaution is taken to ensure a smooth induction and recovery. We will monitor your pet’s vital signs throughout the procedure and ensure they are kept warm and comfortable. We will do everything to ensure the procedure goes as smoothly as possible from start to finish. Upon discharge we will discuss your pet’s aftercare with you and provide you with written instructions.

Underlying parasitic issues such as lung and gut worms and liver/ rumen fluke can cause poor performance in a herd. We can advise on and supply a wide range of competitively priced anthelminthics. As with vaccines, we can draw up a parasite control programme to ensure the correct product is used at the appropriate time for each individual farm.

Calf Health

Scour and pneumonia are the main causes of neonatal mortality in calves and getting a diagnosis quickly is a very important step to help towards prevention of further cases. Investigating these issues involves a number of steps including a farm visit and examining sick calves and taking a range of samples such as blood and faecal samples and swabs to ascertain the cause of the problem. We discuss the best possible options to improve the health and welfare of calves and come up with recommendations on management, housing, vaccination programmes and treatment options to help improve calf welfare and prevent calf disease, reduce calf losses and improve the productivity of your calves.

Bull Fertility Testing

We offer Bull Breeding Soundness Examination (BBSE) – bulls are examined prior to sale/ before the breeding season/ during the breeding season. The examination involves a physical examination of the bull and laboratory semen evaluation +/- assessment of mating ability to advise on the bull’s suitability for breeding. A Veterinary Certificate is issued after the examination.

Herd Health

We provide a complete herd health service which involves visiting your farm, clinical examination of animals and collection of any necessary samples for laboratory analysis.
• Poor performance investigation
• Mastitis and cell counts
• Ultrasound scanning
• Herd fertility programmes
• Parasite control
• Vaccination advice tailored to your individual farm enterprise

Bovine TB Testing

Routine herd testing is carried out throughout the year using a fully electronic recording system connected to the Department of Agriculture. We offer other services in conjunction with the annual herd test e.g. testing for other diseases such as Johne’s disease, Neospora and IBR. Our testing fees are competitive with a discount available for prompt payment.

Vitalife for Calves

Vitalife for calves is a complementary dietetic feeding stuff for the stabilisation of water and electrolyte balance to support the physiological digestion. Its intended use is in case of risk of, during periods of, or recovery from digestive disturbance (diarrhoea). For oral administration, between milk feedings.

Hydra Veaux Powder

Facilitates physiological digestion by stabilizing the electrolyte and water balance. Administer 2 litres of solution in the morning and evening for 2 to 3 days, then 1/2 sachet in 1 litre of water in the morning and evening for the following 2 days.

Oligovet Electro Pidolate Max Bolus

The Oligovet Electro Pidolate Max Bolus contains calcium pidolate and magnesium pidolate and prevents hypocalcaemia (milk fever) by improving the amount of calcium in the blood. Subclinical hypocalcemia, is less well-known because it’s not so obvious. However, it causes many health problems such as retained placenta, difficult calving, metritis, ketosis, mastitis, reproductive disorders, drop in production and increased culling rate. Cows should receive 2 boluses at the first sign of calving, giving 40 hours of controlled release.

CoSeICure Cattle Bolus

CoSeICure soluble glass boluses supply rumen-available copper, cobalt, selenium and iodine in ionic form, at a controlled and constant rate, for up to 6 months in cattle. CoSeICure boluses have a unique ionic copper formulation – this unique, ionic copper is rumen-available.

Oligovet MgCuISe Bolus

Magnesium is involved in many body functions such as muscular contractions, skeleton development, and enzymatic reactions. Two factors increase the risk of grass tetany: deficient supplies related to poor grass and important magnesium needs (dairy production). Trace elements deficiencies are also often linked to appearance of warts as they play a role in immunity (selenium and copper as antioxidants) and in skin quality (copper, iodine).

Oligovet CaP Gel

Provides calcium intake at a non-acidic pH level that respects the integrity of the oral and oesophageal mucosa. It also provides phosphorus intake in a highly soluble form as well as potassium intake postpartum.

Oligovet Pro Pasture Bolus

This bolus is designed to provide trace elements (Copper, Zinc, Iodine, Cobalt and Selenium) throughout the grazing period. It is unique in the market as it offers 8 months (250 days) cover from a single bolus administration.

Oligovet Growth Bolus

Long-term supply of young grazing animals (>100kg) with trace elements (Copper, Zinc, Iodine, Cobalt and Selenium). It is essential to meet the metabolic requirements of the calf during the critical period of growth, since delayed growth up to 6 months is irreversible.

Oligovet Rumi Powder

Oligovet Rumi Powder supports ruminal function by stimulating saliva production (and therefore bicarbonate to regulate pH), fermentation and the fragmentation of the food bolus.

Provita Energy Plus

Provita Energy Plus is a nutritional supplement providing an instantly available energy source to cows with ketosis. It contains energy sources that can be rapidly converted to glucose in the liver, supplying high levels of blood sugar without the harmful over production of Ketone bodies.

Cevital Calf Energy

Energy intake is vital for the calf during critical phases such as dystocia, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, anorexia etc. Each tube delivers 12 hours of energy: delayed and prolonged release of fatty acids, 41% fat and 12% sugars. Give 1 administration of 15ml at birth for weak calves or when they don’t eat.

Milkshake C-Guard

All the benefits of Milkshake plus additional Vitamin C, Vitamin E, natural antioxidants and essential oils. Including natural plant extracts which have been used for centuries as a natural support for the natural management of gut health. It is recommended to feed Milkshake C-Guard from day 1 of life in situations where coccidiosis is present.
